There is no plastic contact with the water. The LED display does not light up when dispensing water using the manual pump, and it has a temperature select button that will shut off the display at night when held for two seconds. The kettle can take loose tea, but it must be put inside the mesh and then into the machine, or the water will take on the tea's smell. It comes with a short learning curve, but once familiar with the features, it will replace the coffee maker if you're into pour-overs and tea.
