- Michael is a novel written by E. F. Benson, first published in 1910. The story follows the life of Michael Comber, a young man from a wealthy family who is sent to study at Oxford University. Michael is a charming and talented young man, but he is also prone to laziness and indulgence. He falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Fanny, but his lack of ambition and direction causes him to lose her to a more successful and driven man.After leaving university, Michael struggles to find his place in the world. He dabbles in various careers and hobbies, but nothing seems to satisfy him. He becomes increasingly disillusioned with his life and his prospects, and begins to drink heavily and indulge in other vices.As the years pass, Michael's health begins to decline and he becomes increasingly isolated from his family and friends. He begins to see visions of Fanny, who he believes is calling out to him from beyond the grave. In the end, Michael dies alone and unfulfilled, having never found his true purpose in life.Michael is a poignant and tragic novel that explores themes of love, ambition, and the search for meaning in life. Benson's writing is elegant and evocative, painting a vivid picture of the world of early 20th century England. The novel remains a classic of English literature and a powerful exploration of the human condition.Though there was nothing visibly graceful about Michael Comber, he apparently had the art of giving gracefully. He had already told his cousin Francis, who sat on the arm of the sofa by his table, that there was no earthly excuse for his having run into debt; but now when the moment came for giving, he wrote the cheque quickly and eagerly, as if thoroughly enjoying it, and passed it over to him with a smile that was extraordinarily pleasant.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
